Ceramicist Klaas de Boer is a globetrotter. He prefers to spend his time looking for traces of ancient cultures. China, Japan, Egypt or South America. And he is a nature lover at heart. In his work, references to ancient cultures and timeless nature can be found. Yet his work looks modern. A balanced effect is achieved by tight shapes and beautiful colors combined with decorations scratched into the clay.

From the first day at the Rietveld Academy Klaas de Boer knew he wanted to become a ceramist. It was in the early sixties, the period in which ceramics developed from applied ceramics to independent art. Picasso and the Cobra movement had already worked with ceramics in an unusual way and played a decisive role in Klaas de Boer's development. Clay was more than a plate or a teapot.

Perfect "look" is what I strive for.

The countless ways you can work with clay and the technique of working with clay, porcelain and stoneware are central to Klaas de Boer's work. Freer work with an emphasis on Aesthetics and Technique, rather than functionality. Ancient firing techniques such as Raku firing give space to the fascination Klaas de Boer brings to his Clay and Objects.

The possibility of using pots and or bowls is completely subordinate to the artistic aspects. Because the ceramicist scratches his images on the perfect forms with the most diverse shades. Scratching with deep and shallow strokes is a specialty of Klaas de Boer. The images and the warm natural tones give the perfectly turned, glazed and fired objects an 'Appearance'. This perfect 'Radiance' is what Klaas de Boer strives for.
