Mixed media artist

I call myself mixed media artist because I have worked with many different materials and techniques. However, lately I have been working mostly with textile materials. I paint on pre-printed fabrics, use embroidery and knit objects. The most recent theme in this is the theme of "woman," where I do a lot of portraits of women, not so much to depict certain persons as realistically as possible, but to give a kind of reflection of "the woman. (Maybe I am all these portraits together?)

Characteristic of all the works is that there always seems to be something in between the viewer and the depicted. There is always a layer in between so that the depicted person can never be fully seen, she does not fully reveal herself. But the spectator, too, is therefore never fully perceivable from the point of view of the person portrayed. There remain mutual secrets, built-in safeties, own interpretations, etc.

A characteristic feature of my works is that there always seems to be something in between the viewer and the depicted.

Sometimes such an in-between layer consists of a painted layer with design from the background that is painted over the image back into the foreground. Sometimes I embroider over the painting. And in the case of the knitted objects, there is often a covered face where no facial features are visible. The women depicted are always strong characters who often look at you frontally behind their "voile," but at the same time have acquired a kind of vulnerability as a result.

I am Dutch but since four years working from Spain where I currently live. In doing so, I exhibit regularly in Spain, the Netherlands and abroad. Work of mine was shown at the 8th Biennal of Contemporary Textile Art in Madrid, a fiber art exhibition at Zhou B Art Center in Chicago USA, SCYTHIA textile biennial in the Ukraine and URVANITY Artfair in Madrid.

On my Instagram account you can follow the current state of affairs and find a statement I "borrowed" from David Lynch that comes straight from my heart and is applicable to most of my artwork: "This whole world is wild at heart and weird on top.
