Ruth Fernandes graduated from art school in Israel and later studied printmaking, photography and sculpture at schools in Britain and the United States of America. Currently Ruth lives and makes her art in Malaga, in southern Spain. She previously lived in the United States, Israel, Mexico and Bulgaria.
Ruth's art consists of mixed media pieces. She sews, embroiders and sculpts fabrics. She creates painted collages from discarded garments, cardboard, paper, plastic and other interesting media.
The deep connection with fabrics and textiles stems from her early childhood and her relationship with her mother, who as a kibbutz shopkeeper was charged with distributing clothing to the community. It was there that she explored the various textures and endless colors inherent in fabrics and clothing. When Ruth moved to Mexico, she discovered the way place affects these patterns, the vibrancy of colors and texture. More recently, she began combining fabric and collage with paint, while also exploring the use of cardboard and plastic. With each new step, Ruth continued to explore new media and techniques, inspired by her surroundings.
