Andrés Mérida (Algeciras, 1964) has lived in Málaga since 1970. He began his professional artistic career in the 1990s. He studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Seville, and his career took off through exhibitions in Spain and abroad. His work has been shown in New York, Mexico City, Hong Kong, Dortmund, Guadalajara and Lisbon, among other places.
From the outset his work has been influenced by the artistic movements of the twentieth century — expressionism and surrealism — through which he created his own universe and a style that is easy to recognise.
In the first decade of this century he travelled for long periods to the United States and Mexico, where he held several exhibitions and began experimenting with performance, live painting and interaction with other artists.
On a technical level he experiments with digital art in combination with traditional techniques. He also introduces a new expressive resource into his work through what he himself calls “GARIBATISM”: making circular strokes with which he sometimes creates recognisable forms, while at other times they appear as purely abstract decoration.
This new way of working is the result of years of research, with influences from artists such as Giacometti and J. Pollock.
He is currently working on new exhibitions and collaborations with other artists. A more recent example is his contribution to the set design for “SOMBRAS”, the show by the great flamenco dance artist Sara Baras.
