José Manuel González Martínez

After many years of expressing himself through graphic art, painting and design, José Manuel feels that it is in kinetic art that he can best translate his talent for precision and vision into grace and movement within a work of art. New hardware and software technologies such as Arduino and Processing give him the tools he needs to create works in motion: pieces capable of interaction, that produce sound and change colour, as in nature itself.

Since childhood José Manuel has had a natural desire to create things with his hands, encouraged by his father, who is also an artist. Since those early years he has had the chance to develop his skills in a variety of settings, such as the International University of Andalusia, the Joan Miró Foundation, Media Lab Prado and the Andalusian Centre for Contemporary Art (CAAC), to name only a few. He has received a number of grants and prizes, including the Pilar Juncosa & Sotheby’s grant from the Joan Miró Foundation in Palma de Mallorca, the Francisco de Zurbarán prize for young artists, and INICIARTE from the government of Andalusia. He also spent more than two years as an ‘Artist in Residence’ on an exchange at the institute for cultural research IKONO in Málaga.

His participation in exhibitions, both group and solo, spans more than two decades. His work has been shown in galleries, museums and at art fairs in Spain, Portugal, France, the USA, Sweden, Cuba and the United Kingdom.
